Use of Sound in a Horror Clip

Music in horror movies is used to help create a mood in a scene. It helps to encourage emotions that the audience watching should feel. There are common conventions of music that used in horror movies; such as:
  • Isolated instruments
  • Long suspenseful notes
  • Extreme changes of pitch tones
There are also a lot of sound effects that are used in horror films. There are a lot of types of connotations that make a horror film recognisable, such as; bats, crows, church bells and witches laughing. These are just the classical sound effects that are used in horror films. There are also voices that are used reflect fear, tension and panic. The tone of voice is used can also depend on how tension in the film is created and who is trying to create it. In the clip below, it is from SAW, it is clear that the Jigsaw is the one who is trying to create fear and tension. His voice stands out from other characters, meaning it is easily recognised. Also, his voice creates a sense of power because it has a husky, deep tone to it.
