The Nightmare on Elm Street

The Nightmare on Elm Street

The setting used in the opening sequence of The Nightmare on Elm Street is a dark, dingy, chamber. There are knives, gloves, chemicals and blades lying around, suggesting that the owner of the room is mentally disturbed. The audience are only introduced to one character in the opening sequence, and this is a girl in her late teens running away from something and trying to escape a dark corridor. The facial expression of this girl clearly indicates that she is scared of what might happen to her, and the buy the way she is dressed it shows that she wasn't ready to have the night that she is having, as she is only dressed in her night gown and isn't wearing any shoes.

There is only dialogue until later on in the opening sequence. Before that there is justified sound such as, a girl screaming, a goat scream, tearing of cloth and footsteps of someone running away. This made the non-diegetic in the background of opening sequence intensify as the opening sequence went on. The non-diegetic music begins after the main character puts on his blade gloves and the title appears.

The beginning shot shown in the opening sequence is a low angle of the main characters feet, and a hand near the feet picking something up. The next shot shown is the item that was picked up, being placed onto a table, this shows continuity and a flow in the storyline. The hands of the main character are the only thing that the audience see by this point, suggesting that those are the most important features of the main character so far.
