Scream

Scream

The first shot that introduces the audience to the opening sequence is a close up of a telephone ringing, and a teenage girl answering the phone. There is a medium close up that introduces the girl to the audience and then she begins to question the person on the other side of the line. The audience are unaware of who is speaking on the other end of the telephone, this helps to create a sense of mystery to the opening sequence. The girl then places the back and then walks off. This is shown as a medium close up. However, the phone rings again and then a close up shows the girls hand picking the receiver back up again, the girl then continues to question the person on the other end of the phone, questioning why they rang again, the audience are still not introduced to the other person.

The sound doesn't vary in the opening sequence. The main sound used is justified sound and dialogue between the two characters in the opening sequence. The dialogue is what creates the horror suspense throughout the opening sequence, until the young girls boyfriend is introduced. He is tied up to a chair on the girls patio with blood running down his face. Later on the title sequence, the audience find out that the person on the phone is at the girls house and that he killed her boyfriend whilst he was still strapped to a chair on her patio.

The audience are introduced to the person after he kills her boyfriend, and he threatens to kill her too, if he doesn't play the game he wants her to and she has to win in order to live. He asks her a question about another horror movie and she assumes she has got the answer right, when in actual fact it was incorrect. He then gives her a bonus question to guess what door he is at.
