The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

The film begins with a loads of pictures of a baby being shown and a video clip of a child having a bandage wrapped around his face. There are close up shots of letters, there are letters that state someone's age and newspaper articles about jobs being lost and a newspaper article about how everyone in a town has died. Also, throughout the opening sequence the close up f the baby photo is shown, this suggests that the character in the photo or the photo has a significant representation in the movie itself. However, later on in the opening sequence there is a close up of someone trying to burn the baby photo.

Throughout the opening sequence, there is non-diegetic music. The music reflects the opening sequence as it has a sense of creepiness to it, and this reflected in the opening sequence when a child is having a bandage being wrapped around his face, and the news articles about peoples deaths. The non-diegetic music creates a tense atmosphere, this can also be used to help to scare the audience watching the opening sequence. There is no dialogue used in the whole of the opening sequence, this could be to create a sense of mystery and also a ghostly atmosphere.

There are no characters that the audience are introduced, however, there are a set of hands that are shown constantly throughout the opening sequence and this could be the main character, but the use of the hands can be used to introduce the main character on in the film. Also, the props such as the baby photo and the newspaper articles can all be related to the main character, but the audience do not know this until later on in the film. The lighting throughout the opening sequence is quite dark and dingy, this could be to create an atmosphere, or an idea in the audiences head that they are in a secret place such as a shed, or cabin.
